Grade 5 camp in Zeeland

Primary

Reaching the end of primary, the grade 5 students and teachers celebrated their achievements by participating in three days of exciting activities. This year we went to Camp Kanoa, in Zeeland, a place with a free spirit atmosphere where we slept in tents & sat around the campfire.

Students participated in outdoor activities such as klimbos and archery. For many students, this marked their first time being away from home where they could embrace their newfound independence and improve on essential skills such as organising their own clothing, cleaning up common areas or washing dishes. Of course, having fun with their friends was also on the agenda!

This is what our students had to say about the experience:

“I felt PUMPED! I was so excited to do the rope activity, and the cabins and tents looked great. I loved the high rope; the 12m was super fun, and so was the zip line. I also loved archery. I was so proud that I won with 22 points. I faced the challenge of not having a proper jacket, though I managed with my sweaters. I also faced the challenge of losing my precious earring, but I found it. Also, the weather on the second day was not the best. Camp was a fun experience.”

“The place was very, very nice. So were the cabins. But it wasn't what I expected... It was more than what I expected! My favourite activity was the Klimpark (climb park). I loved talking with my friends in the cabin and having fun inside. The Steps were challenging because it was pretty hard, but it was also fun. The camp was super-duper amazingly fun!”

“When we arrived, I kind of didn't know what to expect, but I knew that these three days were going to be fun. My favourite activity was definitely the ropes above the water, even though in the end our group lost. In the activities, we encouraged each other to try different things, and without that, I'm sure that I wouldn't have made it to ring the bell. The challenge I and all the girls in my cabin had to face on the first day was falling asleep. We couldn't manage to do that because, literally, every time it was finally quiet, someone said something, and then everyone started talking or laughing. Luckily, the next day we were so tired we fell asleep quickly. If I had to summarise my experience in one sentence, I would say that we got to know each other better than we would ever get a chance to at school.”

“When I arrived at the camp, I saw that the view was amazing, and it looked really cool, especially the Kilmbos. But the cabins kind of made me upset because the walls were made out of cloth. However, I was full of excitement about the activities we would be doing. I was missing my family a little because I wouldn't see them for the next three days. I loved the Kilmbos because it was a challenge for me. I had never done it before in my life, and it was a little bit scary, but later on, I could handle it. I faced two challenges. First, climbing to the third level was difficult because my hands were extremely sweaty, making it hard for me to hold the wood. I thought I would fall down and get hurt, but everything worked out in the end. It was fun, and I did enjoyable activities.”

- Dhruv

“I was feeling excited, and I was amazed by the nature. When I first saw the cabins and tents, I wanted to sleep in them immediately. The second thing I saw was the zip line/climbing area. I was super excited to climb, but I was kind of scared too. When I did the highest zip line, I was really proud of myself. My biggest challenge was dealing with bugs, and most importantly, spiders because I have arachnophobia (fear of spiders). When I arrived at camp, there were a lot of spiders around me, and most importantly, near my bed. But after a while, I got used to it. I used to be terrified of spiders, but camp helped me get over my fear. Now I don't have arachnophobia, and I am not scared of spiders. It was a fun experience with my friends that helped us use more teamwork, overcome our fears, and bond with nature.”

- Zeynep

“My favorite activity was archery tag. It was really interesting, and I also got to play with my friends. It was so fun and cool. There were some challenges that I faced. The first thing was that it was really cold in the cabins, and my sleeping bag was not warm enough. The second one is that I really missed my family. The last one was that the food was different from what I eat, so it was hard to get full, but I managed to get over these things. We did a lot of activities, had good food, and I also got into a cabin. I also played with my friends.”
