Grade 6 students took a step back this semester to think conceptually about number systems. For instance, why is the Egyptian system considered “additive?” What makes the Mayan “place value” system different from our base 10? How else have different civilisations represented the idea of “number” throughout history? In the picture above you see students working hard at translating our number system into Mayan base 20.
These students are deciphering Roman numerals still found in use today.
Students even had the opportunity to learn base-2, giving them the ability to read a binary clock!
What the Grade 6's are saying
“My favourite number system was the Chinese-Japanese because it was really easy and logical to understand.” (Swathi, 6M)
“The most difficult number system is the Mayan system because it is not in base ten like our system; it is in base twenty." (Syan, 6M)
“My favourite number system is base 2 because even the most complex ideas begin with just two choices, and it’s computer related.” (Antoni, 6M)
“I like the Mayan system because it has cool symbols and it is interesting.” (Rishabh, 6M)
“My favourit number system is the roman numerals because it's rich in culture and history.” (Vedanth, 6M)
Grade 7 is tackling algebra
Students in Grade 7 have hit an important and exciting benchmark in their learning. While algebraic concepts have been taught in the past, students recently started their first full algebra unit – learning how to collect like terms, balance equations, and use proper terminology.
What the Grade 7's are saying
"Algebra is like a puzzle, I'm excited to unlock the patterns behind numbers and see how all the pieces fit together" (Hibah, 7U)
“My favourite thing I have learned so far in algebra was when we were learning about the key words and when we were learning index laws. It was very interesting for me and it made me excited to continue learning.” (Shiv, 7U)
“I’m exited to study algebra because it is an ancient and interesting topic.” (Eve, 7U)
“I’m looking forward to studying algebra because when I was in Grade 5, I thought algebra was random letters and numbers and I thought it was SUPER hard. But now that I’m studying it, I see that it’s not as hard as I thought and I’m enjoying it. It’s a really fun subject.” (Mali, 7U)
