English, Language Coordinator
Born in London from an English mother and an Italian father, Sara d’Orazio is a cultural hybrid with an academic hat on. She was brought up bilingually, English and Italian, living between Italy and England.
Most of Sara’s professional life has been dedicated to teaching and studying English. After graduating in Modern Languages with a 1st class degree from Florence University, she began to teach English literature and Italian language at Manchester Metropolitan University. Here she also started a PhD in English Literature. This was when Sara realised it was the social, interactive dimension of the academic world she loved the most: sharing ideas with colleagues and exploring the subject with her students, not the solitary research. So, at the end of her Doctorial studies, she left academia and trained as a Secondary and College teacher.
Not surprisingly, Sara was drawn to schools that offered an in-depth and academic curriculum. Therefore, she took up a position at Urmston Grammar School, where she stayed for two years, teaching middle years, GCSE and Diploma level students. From there she moved into International education and ISUtrecht when her husband was offered work in the Netherlands. Given her multicultural background, this was a natural step and one she took wholeheartedly – after a brief break completing a CELTA certificate and teaching English in Amsterdam.
