Judith O’Brien grew up in Dublin, Ireland. After finishing school, she completed her BA in English and History at The National University of Ireland in Galway. Judith obtained her teaching qualification in English and Drama teaching in 2005 in Canterbury Christ Church University in the U.K.
She is a committed and experienced Middle Years and Diploma Programme teacher. She has enjoyed travelling and teaching internationally in: Seoul, South Korea; Gran-Canaria, Spain; Stavanger, Norway; London, United Kingdom and most recently, in Dublin, Ireland. She believes that English and Drama are subjects that complement each other very well and she often uses her knowledge of the dramatic arts to inform and enrich her teaching in English.
In 2016, Judith completed her MA in The Advanced Teaching of Shakespeare with Warwick University in the U.K. Her MA study deepened her subject knowledge of: Shakespeare, theatre, a range of effective active approaches to teaching and literature analysis. Judith believes that going back to study whilst also working full-time, was sometimes a challenge but it enriched her passion for teaching as well as giving her more empathy for students grappling with the struggle of academic writing!
Judith believes it is important to encourage students to have high standards and believes that promoting life-long education is vital in today’s world as we all need to keep developing. She believes that education should be inspiring and relevant.
Beyond the classroom, Judith really enjoys the arts, especially theatre and dance, as well as cooking and hiking. Judith feels quite lucky to know Utrecht quite well as she is married to a Dutch native and has spent a lot of time exploring the Netherlands already. Judith is looking forward to joining the English and Drama departments at The International School of Utrecht.
