Grasyntha Mellanie is an artist educator, designer, and illustrator. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication Design at the Trisakti University Jakarta, Indonesia, after which she worked as a graphic designer for a couple of years.
In 2005 she continued her studies at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht to obtain a Master of Art in Editorial Design. After obtaining her MA degree, Syntha moved back to Jakarta and became an Art Director in one of the graphic firms in the city. Throughout her career as a designer, she realized that she needed to be able to share her passion and knowledge for Visual Arts with others.
It was a real turning point for Syntha when she decided to take up the position of a Visual Arts teacher in one of the International Schools in Indonesia, teaching mostly IB Diploma Visual Arts and IGCSE Art. After spending nine years teaching, Syntha decided to travel back to the Netherlands to get another Master degree, this time as an Artist Educator in ArtEZ, Hogeschool voor de Kunst, Arnhem.
Coming from Indonesia with a mixed ethnicity background including Dutch, Syntha has a strong interest in heritage, history, culture, and diversity, as well as both environmental and social issues. Her personal projects often explore the value within art and education in relation to their functions in the community, focusing on how the essence of artistic narratives can be an educational experience that creates a dialogue between the students as the artists and the community as the audience.
